The largest Danish retailer operating globally, JYSK, is set to open six new stores by the end of its financial year in August 2021, creating 100 jobs and taking the total number of UK stores to 26. The UK expansion comes off the back of a record global turnover of €4.1b (+7.6% YoY) during the financial year 2019/20 and a UK-wide trend that has seen homewares sales soar.

The first store of the UK expansion to open will be in Liverpool and it will be the biggest store in the country to date. Founded in Denmark in 1979 by Lars Larsen, over the past four decades JYSK has expanded to 51 countries with more than 2,900 stores worldwide employing more than 24,000 people.

The UK expansion comes at a time when huge proportion of the population are at home more than ever before. Roni Tuominen, UK & Ireland Country Manager for JYSK explains, ‘Our sales during lockdown showed that many people are choosing to invest in their homes this year rather than spending money on going out or on holiday. With the difficulties of the pandemic continuing, people are creating their perfect home environments which they can feel safe and comfortable in and JYSK are happy to be able to assist with that.’  With the near future of the high street and bricks and mortar stores looking less than certain, it might seem like a bold move to be opening stores amidst a pandemic but with tremendous success already seen for their Irish expansion, the future of home retail is positive.

Jenny Johnston, JYSK Sales and Marketing Manager, UK & Ireland explains the thinking behind the expansion: “We are delighted to announce our plans for our UK expansion. Whilst is has been a tough year for retail in many ways, we are very confident in the market and over the next 12 months the company will continue to develop and grow. When considering our UK expansion, our customer’s safety has always been at the forefront of our plans. We have ensured that all our current and future stores are a safe and enjoyable place to shop under the current COVID-19 circumstances. There is no denying that items purchased for the home have a sensory element – you need to feel sheets or touch a mattress before you commit to buy. All of the stores that we launch will provide an excellent shopping experience while remaining incredibly safe with social distancing and a very high standard of hygiene and cleaning measures in place.”

Liverpool will be the first store of JYSK’s upcoming UK expansion plans opening in October, with another five store launches by the end of the financial year in August 2021 which will take their UK total stores to an ambitious 26, “The sky really is the limit for JYSK and we remain committed to our expansion plans even in the current climate,” says Jenny.
