Meadowhall is celebrating its 35th anniversary, with September marking three and a half decades since the centre opened its doors for the first time. Owned by Norges Bank Investment Management and asset managed by British Land, Meadowhall is firmly established as one of the UK’s prime super regional shopping centres.

Its evolution and contribution over a generation have ensured Meadowhall has stood the test of time, continuing to drive substantial economic growth for South Yorkshire, as an iconic destination with a significant regional pull. The centre still houses many of the industry-leading brands it had on opening day, with stores continuing to succeed, recommitting to the destination time and again. 17 brands, including M&S, Boots, H. Samuel, and McDonald’s, have been a consistent presence at Meadowhall, representing over 240,000 sq ft and, much like the destination itself, reinvigorating in style and fit-out several times since 1990, to remain relevant and exciting.

Internally, the Meadowhall of today is unrecognisable from the one that opened 35 years ago. The destination has been transformed through significant investment over the years, seeing The Avenue and key areas of the centre elevated to attract leading global brands including Zara, Bershka, Mango, and Space NK. In that time, Meadowhall has welcomed many regional debuts across retail, F&B, and leisure, including Sephora, Bershka, Frasers, Flannels, and The Real Greek.

Louisa Holmes, Asset Director at British Land, said: “Cemented as one of the UK’s prime super regional shopping centres, Meadowhall is an icon that is just as exciting today as it was in 1990. We are proud of how much it has contributed regionally, as a landmark for South Yorkshire and a case study for the enduring relevance of the physical retail experience.

“Meadowhall is a standout destination, made so through creative asset management and strategic investment over the last three and a half decades. The asset management has always been about delivering the most exceptional experience with best-in-class brands, creating a place that generation after generation want to continue to return to. Our focus is to ensure we continue to evolve with the needs and wants of Meadowhall’s community, so it still has purpose and demand for the long term.”

Playing a key role in the community since 1990, Meadowhall has hosted hundreds of days of events and raised millions for local charities in the last 35 years. The destination has also welcomed many successful local businesses over the years, including long-standing tenant, Caffè Rizzoli, which is due to launch its second concept, Harriet’s, in Meadowhall later this year.

Meadowhall has recently been revealed as the most dominant super regional shopping centre in the UK, following a ranking of catchment spending metrics by data specialists, CACI. Meadowhall captures 18% of the total purse within its catchment, including online spend, which is more than any other comparable destination.
