When Bruno isn’t dictating things, Newcastle lose a bit of their identity in midfield. The game becomes slower, more predictable.
It doesn’t need a huge change from him. Just a return to that level where everything goes through him properly.
Miguel Almirón – Needs to Turn Effort Into Output
Almirón is a strange one to judge, because you can’t really question his effort.
He does everything you’d want off the ball. Presses, tracks back, keeps things moving. No issues there.
But football isn’t just about that.
There was a time – not even that long ago – where he was actually making a difference in games. Scoring, creating, looking dangerous every time he got into space.
That version hasn’t shown up often enough this season.
Now it feels like a lot of good work that doesn’t lead anywhere. He gets into the right areas, then the final action just isn’t quite there. And you notice it more in tighter games where one good decision could change everything.
It’s not a dramatic drop-off, just enough to be frustrating.
And right now, Newcastle need more than just effort from wide areas.
Callum Wilson – Feels Like He’s at a Crossroads
Wilson’s situation feels a bit different, but also more uncertain.
You know what he can do. When he’s fit and sharp, he’s a proper striker. Good movement, good finishing, always a threat.
The problem is we haven’t seen that version consistently this season.
Injuries have played a part, obviously. But even when he’s been available, it hasn’t quite clicked. He’s had moments, but not sustained runs of form.
At the same time, Isak has stepped in and looked more natural in a lot of games. That changes things.
So now it feels like Wilson’s in a position where he can’t just ease his way back in. When he plays, he needs to make something happen.

You could easily name a few others.
Longstaff has had games where he’s solid, but also games where he just blends in a bit too much. Defensively, there have been small lapses – nothing constant, but enough to cost points here and there.
So yeah, it’s not only about three players.
But these are the ones people look at first when things aren’t quite working.
If It Stays Like This…
This is probably the frustrating part.
Newcastle aren’t miles off. That’s what makes it annoying. It’s not a rebuild situation, it’s not a crisis – it’s just a team that hasn’t quite pushed on when it had the chance.
If these players don’t raise their level, the season probably just… fades out. Not badly, but without really achieving what it could have.
And that’s the kind of thing that lingers into the summer.

There’s enough quality in this squad. That’s not really up for debate.
But quality only gets you so far if it’s not consistent.
